Duration appears in regular ffmpeg/ffprobe output, however, "N/A" for the same command with show_stream and there's no way to access the given duration in [STREAM]

You can get duration from format instead of stream:
ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration -of default=noprint_wrappers=1:nokey=1 input.mkv
