Description

Summary of the bug: WTV files created by ffmpeg do not play back on X360 extender.
It gives an error:
" Files needed to display video are not installed..."

However it plays back fine on WMP and MCE.

To clarify the ffmpeg created WTV file has mpeg2video and AC3 audio.

To make this a useful and valid ticket please:

Find a wtv file that plays on "XBox 360 extender" (between 2 and 10 MB, slightly bigger if you only have HD samples).

Provide the sample.

Try "ffmpeg -i yoursample -acodec copy -vcodec copy out1.wtv" and test if the output file plays as expected. If it does not, please provide the complete, uncut console output.

If out1.wtv plays fine, try to only reencode the audio:
"ffmpeg -i yoursample -vcodec copy -acodec ac3 -ac 2 -ab 128k out2.wtv", test the output file and provide complete, uncut console output if it does not play.

If out1.wtv and out2.wtv play fine, try to only reencode the video:
"ffmpeg -i yoursample -acodec copy -vcodec mpeg2video -qscale 10 out3.wtv", test out3.wtv and if it does not play, provide the complete, uncut console output.

None of the above 3 files created by ffmpeg work on the Xboc 360 Extender. while the original files does play.

I've uploaded the original file WTV-Extender-Issue.wtv

here's another interesting things. once I install ffdshow, wtv files created by ffmpeg crash windows media player (on windows 7) but WMP plays native WTV files properly.
There's something funny about the wtv files created by ffmpeg which is causing WMP to crash.

it's working fine on WMP in Win 7 and on win 8, I don't have access to Extender right now but will get it tested from one of the users.

This ticket fixes the issue with mpeg2video in WTV not playing in the XBox extender.
However h.264 in WTV still does not play with the extender (it play on WMP and MCE).

I am also having trouble with WTV files created with H.264 video. I get audio but no video when trying to play back on the XBOX 360. @ramitbhalla: Unfortunately, no. You have to pay for the newest version of MCEBuddy and the free/trial version is an older version that does not have the fix in it. The bug report in the link sounds like the same problem I am having, but I can't verify that the fix works for me.

Unfortunately, still the same problem with the Aug 27 ffmpeg git build. I have posted sample files here: ​http://1drv.ms/1kCVSSW

The M2TS file is the original source file that plays both audio and video on the 360.
The MKV file is a direct stream copy/remux with mkvmerge that plays both audio and video on the 360.
The WTV file is a direct stream copy/remux with ffmpeg that just plays audio (blank screen) on the 360.

Note that WMC does not detect the length of the WTV file so this may be part of the problem? Hopefully someone can do a direct stream copy/remux with v 2.3.15 of MCEBuddy and share it to see if the problem is resolved there.

I added another WTV sample file that does play properly on the 360. This was the same source file remuxed with VideoRedo and other than having the correct duration, I can't determine what is different with this WTV that allows it to play properly (MediaInfo confirms that a straight remux was performed with no re-encoding). Hopefully someone can figure out what the ffmpeg-created sample is missing.

I see that in the VideoRedo options it has a "Move MOOV atom to beginning of file" option so maybe this has something to do with it? I wish I did but does anyone have the expertise to figure out what it different/missing with the ffmpeg remux? Or should I give up on this?

Stream IDs in the alternative headers weren't consistent. (I am not even sure those alternative stream definition headers are a necessity.) I've looked into it like a month ago and seems like I've lost the patch, but remember a few details so trying to rebuild it.

If I post patch against git here are you able to compile and test with that?

You can patch it with the following command run in the ffmpeg directory:

patch -p0 < wtv.patch

Please run it first on files with single audio and video streams (one each).

Yes definitely interested in the fix, am still good for it.

Sorry been a little busy, am a little confused by the results so am still testing it.
This one seems to work fine on WMP and MCE, however with the 360 it works with mpeg2video (like the existing one) but with libx264 it doesn't work (like the existing one).
The confusion I have is I've been able to get the existing code work with 360 but can't seem to do it consistently, so am checking what settings I changed while testing it. Once I get that I'll put back here and maybe you can reconcile the difference to see why it works one way and not the other.

Great work, though could you explain what you did here?

There are multiple (3 of them, call them A, B and C) stream descriptors written into each file. FFmpeg when reading the file only uses two (A, B); when writing it only writes (A, C).

One of them (C) seemed to have used wrong stream ids and I hoped that is what Xbox is trying to use. Apparently not. Next steps can be disabling those headers and leaving only A, B, or C on and seeing which player works with which version. From there on we can nail down the bug.
